Okay. I’ll say it. We’ve written some bangers this year. Here are the top Economic Forces newsletters of the year.
Most Overdue Newsletter of 2023
Ever since we started the newsletter in 2020, people would ask, “What is price theory?” We never really had an answer. Or, I’ll say, I never had an answer. This post was our first attempt at summarizing what we do at Economic Forces and what we mean by price theory. Whenever we get around to writing our book, I’m sure this will be the basis for the introduction.
Brian’s Most Popular Posts
Here are my (Brian’s) most popular posts of 2023. I hope these quick lists are helpful, especially for the recent converts who may have missed some from before they signed up.
If there was a theme for what people enjoyed, it was “posts about UCLA economists.” My posts on Sowell, Demsetz, and Alchian all seemed to resonate with people, especially on Twitter. 🤷♂️
Josh’s Most Popular Posts
If I were to describe a theme to Josh’s popular posts, it was “basic economics helps us understand inflation.” That’s a point many people, even economists, seem to miss, making Josh’s contribution to The Discourse more important than anything I wrote.

^ I can’t believe this post is only from 2023. I feel like I’ve been citing it against bad inflation arguments for years.
THANK YOU!
I know this is all self-indulgent, but I want to thank our readers for that support. We are sending 182 newsletters into this adventure (every Thursday since September 6, 2020, plus some bonus content). For the top posts since 2020, click here.
It’s fair to say that 2023 was a breakout year. We’ve more than doubled our subscribers (now over 11,500). Every time I see that number, it blows my mind. Before this newsletter, I blogged for years only to have six readers per post. That was fun and I learned a lot, but I’ll say it’s more fun when people read. All the new readers also help because we really only write about three things: supply, demand, and supply and demand. The ideas may be old, but the readers are new!
Thanks, everyone. So much. Truly. And Happy New Year!
As always, if you’ve learned something from this newsletter, we’d appreciate your support by subscribing or sharing your favorite posts.
